What is this project about?
Enlightenment saves us is a project about the intervention made in the municipality of Sirmione and published on the website of Opencoesione, for the improvement of public energy efficiency. Our aim is to verify the actual implementation of the intervention, its economic and social results, and then to carry out surveys involving citizens to make sure that they have got the promised results and are satisfied with them.
School Context:
The 5A CAT class (Construction, Environment and Territory) of the Bazoli Polo Higher Technical Institute in Desenzano del Garda (BS) undertook the OPENCOESIONE project in English with the collaboration of teachers Meloni Silvana, Vielmi Monica Adele and Gandellini Linda. The project
On 01st/12/2023 and 02nd/12/2023, the class started the project viewing the videos in Italian on the “A Scuola di OpenCoesione” website https://www.ascuoladiopencoesione.it/) to learn more about the project and the platforms to use.
On 07th/12/2023 the class, divided into groups, began to browse the OpenCoesione website (https://opencoesione.gov.it/it/) to search for the project to analyze during the course. Each group selected a project in the surrounding areas of Desenzano del Garda.
On 11th/12/2023 the selected projects were illustrated to the other classmates by the various members of the groups. Subsequently the class chose the following project among the ones proposed : "Improvement of the energy efficiency of public lighting systems in the municipality of Sirmione" and the motto/title of the project to monitor is: "Enlightenment saves us".
On 12th/12/2023 the 5A viewed the videos in English and the various roles were assigned according to what was reported in the procedure. All the students of the class then started working to carry out their tasks which were developed from 12th/12/2023 to 18th/12/2023, during morning classes in laboratories.
Goals and reasons:
This theme of public lighting was chosen because it was considered inherent to the topics and subjects studied in our course (Construction, environment and territory) and because of its importance in relation to environmental sustainability and in particular to the topic of saving energy, which will be crucial for the coming decades. The topic intrigued the class due to the high cost of the interventions mainly supported by the European Union. The class wanted to delve deeper into this project also because they wondered why European funds were used for this type of project. The objective is also to verify whether the supposed energy improvement has really occurred, and whether citizens have been positively affected by this intervention.
Subjects to whom the research is directed:
The research is primarily aimed at the population. With this project, we want to make sure that the municipality's intervention has produced concrete results and that the citizens are satisfied with it. We want to check the efficiency from all points of view by involving the inhabitants who are directly affected by the intervention.
Conclusions
“Enlightenment saves us” was chosen because the amount of the foreseen cost for the project seemed to us to be very expensive. The intervention has taken place in the municipality of Sirmione using money mostly from the European Union and not from the Municipality itself. By working on this project we would like to have the opportunity to understand why these choices were made and if the intervention has actually been implemented with the goals that it had.
