A more functional way for designing the Marsala cycle path

The sun is finally setting: it's the perfect time for a sunset on two wheels. However, in order to enjoy it to the fullest, we need to understand the history of what made it possible for us: the Marsala cycle path, often illuminated by the wonderful orange and pink sky, but unfortunately sometimes also dark. The project dates back to 2001, initiated by the then president of the province of Trapani, Giulia Adamo. It involved creating a 30 km cycling and pedestrian cultural path, known as the greenway, connecting natural, archaeological, historical, and environmental attractions along the coast between Trapani and Marsala. The goal was to complete the pathway by August 2003, but technical and administrative issues, along with a lack of authorization from the Civil Engineering Department, led to the project's suspension.Despite attempts by subsequent leaders, none were able to resolve the situation. In November 2014, former prosecutor Ingroia announced that work would resume and be completed within a year, but the Technical Office of the Free Consortium confirmed the insurmountable nature of the problems. In 2017, the dream of realizing the cycling path faded away. Finally, in 2019, during Dr. Alberto di Girolamo's term, the project was successfully implemented. As of today, the cycling lane in Marsala is one of Italy's most beautiful cycling routes. Stretching 7.6 km, it winds through the landscape of salt pans and islets in the Stagnone Lagoon, passing windmills and colorful basins. The red-colored path is a true pleasure to ride, especially at sunset. It features both horizontal and vertical signage in both directions and includes rest areas, benches, and walls made with eco-friendly materials. In May 2023, former Mayor Di Girolamo stated that administrations should enhance their organization regarding received funds. He also advocated that interconnected bike paths would greatly benefit the city.In 2022, there was an investment of approximately 2 million euros allocated within the "Urban Agenda" program. The project features a scenic route with the Egadi Islands as a backdrop and encompasses significant cultural sites, including the archaeological area of Capo Boeo, the Monument to the Thousand, and the historic Marsala wine cellars. On 1/12/2023, an article was released covering the new urban cycling lane in Marsala.Regarding the internal cycling lane, especially in the Capo Boeo area, there is a note from the municipal administration ensuring that they would have overseen the proper execution of the works and ensure safety along the route. Despite the indisputable potential of the cycle path and the wonderful landscapes that surround it, not everyone considers it effective and well done.Certainly a sunset on two wheels is a unique event but to be pleasant you need much more. There are many negative comments that we were able to read after having distributed a survey on it among the citizens of Marsala, most of them were complaining about the general organization: “It is very dangerous,“I think it could have been designed in a more functional way” or “in some places it hinders traffic".
