A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

We are the “Futureland Explorers”, a fourth year class of the Istituto Gobetti in Genoa. Our school curriculum focuses on the study of human sciences: sociology, economy, psychology and law and because of the nature of the school we have chosen, we are extremely motivated to engage in this new adventure. We have chosen the project “Voucher nido di inclusione”, because it touches many of the areas we are interested in, and we would especially love to see its effects on our territory from a social standpoint.

Because we have selected a project that has to do with families and children, we thought it would be a fun idea to choose a name that would give a nod to the famous tale of Peter Pan, and more specifically we have chosen a play on words that would recall the name of the island of “Neverland”, and the name “Futureland” was born. Obviously the word “future” is often associated with children and childcare, but to us it also conveys the idea that giving support to families can change their future too. The element of exploration, delivered with the word “Explorers”, is related to our journey, as we will explore not only this new world of “Opencoesione” but also our territory.

The logo was easy to create after this. We have used light, pastel colors and we wanted it to be minimal, delicate and breezy, considering the subject of our project.

We began our journey watching the videos available on the website “Opencoesione” to fully understand the topic at hand. Then we worked with our math teacher to analyze the graphics and the data, as these will be crucial for our research. Next, the class was divided into groups, and each group started to research projects financed by The EU in our city. After each group settled on a specific project, we were asked to present them in front of the class, so that we could choose the one that would be better suited for us. Once we settled on the project, we were assigned different roles, so that we could start our work.

Amongst all the different projects, we all agreed to choose the “Voucher nido di Inclusione”, as it was the most interesting. It consists of economic support for low income families, in order to provide access to more inclusive childcare services. This project is promoted by “Regione Liguria” and “Comune di Genova'' with the purpose of preserving the comfort of all citizens. This nursery voucher has an amount that depends on the ISEE value of each family: families that have an ISEE up to 10.000 euros get 200 euros per month for a total of approximately 2000 euros per year. “Opencoesione” would give us the chance to promote a scheme that could make an incredible difference in society. We were mostly impressed with the positive consequences that it could bring about, for instance, how it could seriously help and support not only families with lower income, but also families that could not count on the help of relatives, or could not afford babysitters, and most of all women. With this kind of economic aid, our region could strive to promote gender equality, for example by allowing women to seek economic independence. It can also be very helpful for families for which it is important to have someone who takes care of their children so both parents can go to work and provide a double income for their household. In conclusion, our objective is to promote the project to as many people as possible, to give families the opportunity to take advantage of this subsidy and possibly, changing their future!
