Until the 1960s, San Giovanni a Teduccio was one of the most important industrial areas in Southern Italy, including the Cirio tomato cannery, which was then abandoned after years and years of success.
To date, the former factory has been transformed into an innovation hub connected to the University of Naples Federico II.
This urban recovery project is progressing very well, thanks also to the improvement of public transport, in fact both the connections towards the city center and towards other parts of the region have been strengthened, to the point that the university plans to expand the its presence elsewhere too.
The aim is to stimulate innovation and involve the local population.
In our opinion this transformation is an excellent initiative since reusing an existing space is always better than developing a new one.
In this way we contribute to reducing the consumption of land and additional buildings, which if abandoned could end up being managed by the wrong hands, becoming a place and object of the Camorra, therefore recovering an area of our region in decline, in this case by inserting a department of the university, is excellent for supporting the progress and diffusion of culture.
The inhabitants living in San Giovanni a Teduccio are very optimistic about this change in their city, since according to them it can:
- positively influence urbanization, improving the aesthetic appearance and vitality of the surrounding area
- keeping the memory of the place alive, therefore transforming it into a university can help preserve the heritage of the former Cirio factory
- stimulate local economic growth
- improve the quality of life thanks to the presence of a university, which can certainly lead to an improvement in the quality of life in the surrounding area, through the offer of cultural, recreational and entertainment services, as well as the enrichment of social life and culture of the community.
However, there is also a minority of inhabitants who do not entirely agree with these changes, since according to them:
- all this is harmful to the environmental impact: for them this leads to an increase in environmental pollution or traffic congestion in the area, with a consequent deterioration in the quality of life.
- there is a change in the community due to the university, given that there could be an increase in the cost of living, which would affect not only those attending but also the remaining residents.
- the arrival of a university may limit access to public or cultural spaces for local residents, or may benefit only a part of the population, excluding marginalized or low-income groups.
