ZenaTeamTeens' Project: Digital and Sustainable Harbour 2030

The name of our team represents our city (Zena is the word in dialect for Genoa) and us,  because we are teenagers.

Our team is formed by 2 project managers (Alessandra and Matteo) ; a head of research (Viviana); a coder (Costantino) ; 3 storytellers (Sasha, Aya and Mattia) ; 3 bloggers (Gaia, Nada and Nassima) ; 3 students responsible for social media (Vittoria, Lucia, Adriana) and 4 designers (Klarisa, Lucrezia, Giulia L. and Giulia P.)

All of us belong to the class 3B Lingusitico. We decided our roles according to our skills and attitudes.

The logo represents a ship because the main character of the project is the harbor so it’s connected to it; around the boat there is a blue sparkling water bubble which hugs the boat. The main colors in the logo are green and blue because they are the colors you find if you visit Genoa’s port.

During our classes dedicated to lesson 1 we had to choose the project for our research. We considered some factors such as: our personal interests as teenagers, the possibility to work on the territory easily (for example not too far from the area where we live and study), the possibility to get in touch with the people involved in the project, as well as with common people. Finally, just because we enrolled for ASOC in English, we needed something financed by the EU.

We selected three possible projects from Opencoesione website:

  1. Easy holiday
  2. Ancient port of Genoa SPA (DSH 2030)
  3. Bike path in Corso Italia (main seafront in Genoa)

We made a survey and, at the end, with 10 votes, “DSH 2030” won; “Easy holiday” didn’t get any vote and “Bike path” got 3 votes.

Here is a short description of the project we are going to work on:

Digital and Sustaibale Harbour 2030 starts from the Old Port to create a model for all the metropolitan city, in particular for those area considered of touristic value. Therefore, our research is targeted to citizens living and experiencing Genoa everyday, but also to the many tourists who visit our city (and the Old Port with its many attractions in particular) all year round.

We searched for more detailed information on the website: https://www.digitalsustainableharbour.it/ from which we quote this premise: “Marinas are complex environments, halfway between the natural system and the built one. The port is part of the process of urban, economic and social regeneration. They are a vast source of heterogeneous data which can provide a huge support to the optimization of management processes.” This explains while a model for the Old Port can become a good model for the whole city.

From the same site we read a description of the project:

It is an experiment of ‘IOT’ (Internet of Things) technologies for water and energy consumption control systems thanks to sensors and smart meters. For this will be created a support in the form of enhanced digital twin to optimize and monitor:

  • The environment
  • The resources
  • Monitorate and simulate flows of people and vehicles
  • Quality monitoring of the built system

Furthermore video analysis and ‘AI’ will be made to support security and marketing like gathering detection or estimating the number of people in the area.

There will also be a space management through:

  • Detection of people and movements
  • Overview of maximum and minimum aggregation points
  • Reporting of faults in buildings and street furniture
  • Accessibility data based on the degree of crowding
  • Monitoring and routing of flows through attractors (VR/AR/Gamification)

DSH2030 has also developed an app called “Exploracity”, for citizens and tourists. We decided to download the app, try to use it and, through interviews, discover how many people really know and use it every day.
