We Sea, We Research, We Act

We are students of “Liceo scientifico Archimede” in Acireale, participating in ASOC project in 2022/2023. We are 25 thinking minds, who are part of the 4A and 4D classes, and we are ready for the change!

The project we have chosen is called "SEA MARVEL" (CUP: E69C20000020006) and it is an FESR project (Structural Funds relating to the 2014-2020 programming, Italy-Malta Interreg plan), which sees the collaboration of Sicily and Malta, it started on 14/11/2022 and should end on 13/06/2023, but of the €2,104,822.36 allocated, not even one has been invested. This plan was funded by the European Regional Development fund, programmed by the Sicilian Region (Dipartimento di Agricoltura, Alimentazione ed Ambiente) and benefited by “Università di Catania”. The project's goal correspond to the valorisation and safeguard of the Mediterranean territory, attempting to halt the loss of biodiversity, caused by pollution, spreading real knowledge about the problem to the new generations and seeking new methods to counteract it; an eco-sustainable future is therefore hoped for, which could make Sicily, today dominated by garbage, a worthy tourist destination. Being natives of Sicily, we care about the conditions and survival of our sea that we have learned to know since childhood and this is undoubtedly the reason that led us to join this specific project.

During this month our team met at school, but our work continued outside as well. The first meetings were useful in order to observe and explore the various projects on the site "A Scuola di Opencoesione" and dividing the roles; after choosing to monitor the aforementioned project we gave voice to our creative flair, creating the logo and team name!

Analyzing them, we can state that our name is naturally linked to the ultimate goal of our project, which is the survival of marine biome. There is a word pun in our name (We Sea) in fact, from a phonetic point of view, it is possible to find a similarity between the word “sea” and the English verb “to see” (see): it emphasizes the fact that we see the conditions in which our sea is poured. Now examining the logo, it is easy to understand that the coral is our symbol and it represents the marine world. There is a precise meaning behind the choice of each color present in our logo. Blue in the background indicates the sea on which there is indeed a coral that will be brought back to life through the colors that are present; but it also represents the trustworthiness and the productivity of our research, which is finalized to save the marine environment from its state of degradation. Purple is the color of dreams, it indicates the desired change. Yellow is precisely the color of ambition, in fact our goal is bringing back the sea to its natural splendor. White has a double meaning, it represents a new beginning (in this case the rebirth of the marine biome) but at the same time it is the typical color that corals have when they are dying: in this case white represents the absence of color, the absence of life. Furthermore we can notice some colors in the background: green and pink; the first one indicates nature and its desired renewal, the second one instead indicates hope and optimism that we have for the realization of this project.

We are ready to start this adventure and our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram profiles are also ready to inform our public! Our ideal target are young people, hoping for a change, which could start from the new generations, but in general our project is addressed to everyone who wants to make a change and wants to act.

We hope to be able to have the collaboration of the protagonists of the "Sea Marvel" project (mentioned in the Canvas), in order to collect interesting data, and that with our work and commitment there will be a positive impact on the environment.

Finally we conclude our text with the motto that will always accompany our research: “We Sea, We Research, We Act!”
