The energetic resources and the renewable energy have become more important throughout the years, meanwhile the worlds is trying to reduce its dependence from the fossil fuels and is moving towards more sustainable sources of energy. The renewable energy, like wind energy, solar energy and hydro energy, presents many advantages in opposition to non renewable sources, like the reduction of ground gas emissions, lower costs and a higher energetic security. However, there are some challenges connected to renewable energies, such as the necessity of new investments and infrastructures, like solar panels, wind turbines and the variability of energetic production, that can be influenced by weather conditions. To overcome these issues and improve the infrastructures for renewable energies, the government and the private companies are investing in the research and the progress, but also in the implementation of policies to encourage the use of renewable energy. For example, the tax incentives and the grants can help reduce the initial costs of the transition to renewable energies, while the politics like the feed-in terms can help make the energy costs more stable and to encourage the investments in the production of renewable energy. Furthermore, many struggles are being faced to improve network infrastructures, for example investing in the technology of smart networks, to integrate better renewable. This will help to grant that renewable energy can supply in a reliable way to the clients, even when it come to fluctuations in the production.
Overall, the transition towards renewable energy is a complex and continuous process but, with constant investments and innovations, it’s possible to build a more sustainable and efficient energetic system for our future. Among the possibile options to take in consideration, there is the implementation of renewable energy sources, like solar panels or wind turbines to power the hospitals, that can receive many advantages for the management of these structures. Moreover, the waste fan be reduced by implementing the programs of recycle and by using biodegradable materials, but it’s also possibile to improve the energetic efficiency through the use of technologies for the l'uso of smart buildings and equipment for the energy saving. Another road to take consists in the adoption of ecological transport options, like electric vehicles or bike sharing systems, for the hospital stuff and the patients. Moreover, the use of ecological products for the cleaning in order to maintain the hygiene while reducing the use of chemical aggressive products mantenere. It’s also fundamental to apply a system to preserve water and reduce the waste of water, and to update the HVAC in order to use more efficient techniques. To conclude, we must not underestimate the use of sustainable material of construction, like bamboo or recycled materials, in order to obtain new constructions or restructurations, but also to encourage come the employees to adopt habits that are respectful of our environment, like reducing the consume of paper and turn off the lights when we don’t need them.
After three years of work, Edison, in conjunction with the crisis that hit the oil sector due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, inaugurated a large wind farm in Mazara del Vallo, where Sicily overlooks the Mediterranean, around the town of the ‘red shrimp’. This action was promoted in Sicily precisely because it is generally recognised that the regions of Southern Italy are those where energy savings have little recognition, in fact Campania has recently positioned itself in first place among the Italian regions due to waste of electricity, and for the same reason the name of the Sicilian town of Ragusa emerges, while, on the contrary, Parma, located in Emilia Romagna
The wind plant with about 30 MW of installed capacity consists of 8 wind turbines, and together with the contiguous wind field of about 15 MW and formed by six wind turbines, it is able to generate a renewable production of 125 GWh per year, bringing electricity to 50,000 households and avoiding the emission of about 52,000 tons of CO2 . The construction work lasted 3 years and saw companies engaged suppliers and executors of the territory, for a total of over 112 thousand hours worked.
With this new plant, Edison exceeds 1 GW of installed wind capacity and confirms itself among the country's leaders in the sector, strengthening its commitment to the development of renewable generation, as a strategic axis of growth of the company in line with national and European decarbonisation and energy transition policies: Edison plans to increase its installed renewable power from the current 2 GW to 5 GW by 2030.
In this regard, the CEO of Edison, Nicola Monti, claims that he wants to achieve the goals of carbon neutrality and design a sustainable future for companies and people. Edison's investments in Sicily will be allocated to the construction of 2 new wind farms of about 65 MW and 8 photovoltaic fields of over 240 MW, including photovoltaic plants in the municipalities of Agira and Aidone currently under construction. In particular, in the next 4 years projects will be realised for over 1,300 MW in Southern Italy.
The largest European factory for the production of ‘high-performance’ double-sided PV modules is under construction in Catania. It is a futuristic reality that - as part of the Tango Project - helps to position the island among the leaders of renewable energy. Months have passed since a Svimez survey estimated the possible investments in the sector in Sicily at 8.8 billion and the growth potential of the sector in 19,325 jobs. Now the 3Sun Gigafactory from Catania, controlled by Enel Green Power with the help of British NextEnergy, promises instead to produce 15 thousand panels a day, with a consequent growth in employment.
To date, the island consumes 17 billion kilowatt hours, of which only 33% come from renewables. But the Energy Plan that the Region has launched plans to reach 69% in 2030: 11 eleven turbines with turbines and the call “Investments for the production of renewable energy from renewable energy” will arise in the Elimi park, between the municipalities of Salemi and Marsala, it has a fund of 29 million euros, intended for farmers and companies in the sector, ‘interventions aimed
In San Filippo del Mela, the project of conversion of the A2A power plant currently fed with fuel oil is, however blocked by bureaucratic reasons, going to affect the realisation also at the regional level. The second case symbol of the ‘block’ relating to biogas in Sicily is located in Pozzallo: a plant for the realisation of methane from waste from meat processing proposed by Biometano Ibleo Srl.
The total amount of funds allocated for this project amounts to €4,999,000.00, of which €2,996,160 from the European Union; the cumulative sum fully covers all the expenses necessary for the effective realization of the project. Among these, those concerning technical expenses are relevant, including the conception of the final project, the study of the technical- economic feasibility and the coordination of the works according to the safety standards, the total of which is equal to €197,226.02. Part of the funds went to the State through 10% IVA (VAT) for a value of €403,011.97. Renewable sources represent a growing share in our area, especially in the hospital society. Solar PV is the fastest growing renewable energy source, growing 14% in 2020. Offshore wind is also growing in importance, with global installed capacity exceeding 700 GW in 2020. Furthermore, the amount of eligible works amounts to 3,973,861.57. Expected is also a percentage for Contingencies, which is around €60,436.31. As regards the support to the RUP, Administrative Technical Testing, Accounting Technical Review, Functional Technical Testing, Certification Certificate, the figure increases again, and focuses on € 76,809.11. Finally, any expenses for selection boards including IVA (VAT) amount to €30,000.
We have administered a survey to all the pupils of our school in order to find out about the level of awareness that students have in the field of energy saving. We received a total of 125 replies. 42.9% of the students attend the scientific branch, their age is mainly 14 and 17 years (both correspond to 23.8%). 67.5% say they have never heard of energy efficiency, 45.2% (57 students) consider the service offered by the Lentini hospital to be "intermediate". A figure that gives hope for the best, 73.8% of the students feel close to the issue of energy saving but 1'83.3% was unaware of the funds allocated by the EU for the energy efficiency of the hospital. Although a high percentage feels close to the topic, 46.8% say they do not pay attention to the ways in which energy could be saved in daily life. Part of the students who answered yes (47.6%) save energy through the use of renewable sources or by using electric lighting in their homes (39.3% and 32.6% respectively). 77.8% confess that today's generation is not aware of the energy situation of our time. 99.2% know the advantages of solar panels and 98.4% think it is advantageous to use solar panels in public facilities. 67.5% know of associations that deal with energy saving. The questions were addressed not only to our main objective, i.e. the Lentini hospital, but to the general theme of energy saving and environmental protection. After working out the appropriate questions in class, with all team members participating, the survey was forwarded during school hours and gained a lot of attention. The first questions concerned the general information of the students, such as the current year of attendance, in order to understand whether the information on this topic is linked to personal development, as many have reached a greater level of information over the years, or the amount of information received during the lessons from the teachers. Other questions were instead aimed at verifying the knowledge of the students regarding the funds allocated for energy saving, such as those coming from the EU, but also regarding the use, diffusion and benefits of the panels. The ground was also probed to understand how effectively young people are interested in environmental issues, starting from modest actions, such as saving in one's own small way.
